Nota II (Music Drawing)

This sculptural wall piece is part of a wider body of work which sees Marcus Piper explore the expanded field of drawing and mark-making through experimentation with objects, light and music.

This piece is a layered work that employs a multi-step experimental process, with the artist performing music, which triggers movement in a digital animation of his drawings, stills of which are printed onto glass. A mirror behind the drawing reflects it, as well as the audience and the surrounding room, incorporating the view into the drawing that is printed onto the glass sheet held in front. The environment becomes part of the work and subtle changes mean the experience of the drawing is always shifting and is never exactly the same twice. The work turns the passive spectator into a composer of the drawing and participant in the creation and experience of the piece.

The works speak to his experimental process where physical objects, digital media and analogue imagery – including drawing and darkroom processes – are combined and mingled, often also incorporating performance and sound. This method of working across different approaches and timelines of technological development Marcus refers to as acting as a Digital Craftsperson.
