Arx 1

This rich analogue photographic print is part of a suite of three photograms, created by refracting light through a set of transparent sculptures. Marcus Piper created three sculptural collages using sheets of acrylic, combining them with object to use as a mask to expose each print in a darkroom.

The photogram technique uses a light source, sometimes the sun but in this case an enlarger, to make an image by casting shadows onto light sensitive paper or film. It is one of the earliest forms of photographic image-making and requires no photographic negative or pre-existing image.

The work speaks to his experimental process where physical objects, digital media and analogue imagery – including drawing and darkroom processes – are combined and mingled, often also incorporating performance and sound. This method of working across different approaches and timelines of technological development Marcus refers to as acting as a Digital Craftsperson.

Arx 1 is one of a suite of three related photograms, all made using the same approach but each with its own unique sculptural form used as the object creating the shadows and highlights on the print. The other two works are Arx 2 and Arx 3.
