Description
The Bonded series of glass vessels by Keely Varmalis use copper ruby to imply  the body – flesh and blood – in dialogue with a simmering silver, a kind of wrapping or binding that feels technological. The works explore a duality of protection versus containment. As the artist writes:
Protection is a practice that becomes architecture. At first, it keeps harm at a distance; later, it keeps everything at a distance. We call it strength. We call it adaptation. But it is only the body learning permanence. Over time, the surface thickens, warmth calcifies, and softness becomes structure. What began as defence now holds its own gravity. The refuge becomes the room you can’t leave.
Bonded traces this slow transformation: the moment when care turns to confinement, when the impulse to protect hardens into ritual. The work considers how we build endurance through repetition, how we inhabit the structures we create, and how the boundaries that once kept us safe begin to define what we are. Within that tension, a quiet persistence remains: the body remembering itself beneath the armour.
With a background in sculpture and printmaking, artist Keely Varmalis brings a unique sensibility to her glass art.
